Procedure—Dogsreceivedmedetomidineor dexmedetomidineintravenouslyatthefollowingdose levels:0.4µgofmedetomidineor0.2µgof dexmedetomidine/kgofbodyweight(M0.4/D0.2),4.0 µgofmedetomidineor2.0µgofdexmedetomidine/ kg(M4/D2),and40µgofmedetomidineor20µg ofdexmedetomidine/kg(M40/D20).Sedationand analgesiawerescoredbeforeinduction.Anesthesia wasinducedwithpropofolandmaintainedwith isoflurane.End-tidalisofluraneconcentration,heart rate,andarterialbloodpressuresandgaseswere measured. Results—Degreesofsedationandanalgesiawere significantlyaffectedbydoselevelbutnotdrug. Combinedmeanend-tidalisofluraneconcentrationfor alldoselevelswashigherindogsthatreceived medetomidine,comparedwithdexmedetomidine. Recoverytimewassignificantlyprolongedindogs treatedattheM40/D20doselevel,comparedwith theotherdoselevels.Afterinduction,bloodpressure decreasedbelowreferencerangeandheartrate increasedindogstreatedattheM0.4/D0.2dose level,whereasbloodpressurewaspreservedindogs treatedattheM40/D20doselevel.However,dogsin theselattergroupsdevelopedprofoundbradycardia andmildmetabolicacidosisduringanesthesia.
