Inthe1840s,theUniversalistChurchwantedtoopenacollegeinNewEngland,andCharlesTuftsdonated20acrestothechurchin1852tohelpthemachievethisgoal.CharlesTuftshadinheritedtheland,abarrenhillwhichwasoneofthehighestpointsintheBostonarea,calledWalnutHill,andwhenaskedbyafamilymemberwhatheintendedtodowiththeland,hesaid"Iwillputalightonit."His20-acredonation(thenvaluedat$20,000)isstillattheheartofTufts'now-150acrecampus,straddlingSomervilleandMedford.Itwasalsoin1852thattheCommonwealthofMassachusettscharteredTuftsCollege,notingthecollegeshouldpromote"virtueandpietyandlearninginsuchofthelanguagesandliberalandusefulartsasshallberecommended."Duringhistenure,BallouspentayeartravellingandstudyingintheUnitedKingdom.ThemethodsofinstructionwhichheinitiatedwerebasedonthetutorialsthatwereconductedintheUniversityofOxfordandtheUniversityofEdinburgh.Nowmorethan160yearsold,Tuftsisthethird-oldestcollegeintheBostonarea.[29] Havingbeenoneofthebiggestinfluencesintheestablishmentofthecollege,HoseaBallouIIbecamethefirstpresidentin1853,andCollegeHall,thefirstbuildingoncampus,wascompletedthefollowingyear.ThatbuildingnowbearsBallou'sname.[30]ThecampusopenedinAugust1854.PresidentBalloudiedin1861andwassucceededbyAlonzoAmesMiner.Thoughnotacollegegraduate,hispresidencywasmarkedbyseveraladvances.TheseincludetheestablishmentofpreparatoryschoolsforTuftswhichincludeGoddardSeminary,WestbrookSeminary,andDeanAcademy.DuringtheCivilWarthecollegeactivelysupportedtheUnioncause.ThemansionofMajorGeorgeL.StearnswhichstoodonpartofthecampuswasastationontheUndergroundRailroad.Inadditiontohavingthelargestclassesspringup,63graduatesservedintheUnionarmy.Thefirstcourseofathree-yearprogramleadingtoadegreeincivilengineeringwasestablishedin1865,thesameyearMITwasfounded.By1869,theCraneTheologicalSchoolwasorganized.[31] Miner'ssuccessor,ElmerCapenwasthefirstpresidenttobeaTuftsalumnus.Duringhistime,oneoftheearliestinnovatorswasAmosDolbear.In1875,aschairofthephysicsdepartment,heinstalledaworkingtelephonewhichconnectedhislabinBallouHalltohishomeonProfessorsRow.TwoyearslaterAlexanderGrahamBellwouldreceivethepatent.Dolbear'sworkinTuftswaslatercontinuedbyMarconiandTesla.[32]OtherfamousscholarsincludeWilliamLeslieHooperwhoinadditiontoservingasactingpresident,designedthefirstslottedarmaturefordynamos.Hisstudentatthecollege,FrederickStarkPearson,wouldeventuallybecomeoneofAmerica'spioneersoftheelectricalpowerindustry.HebecameresponsibleforthedevelopmentoftheelectricpowerandelectricstreetcarsystemswhichmanycitiesinSouthAmericaandEuropeused.AnothernotablefigureisStephenM.Babcockwhodevelopedthefirstpracticaltesttodeterminetheamountofbutterfatinmilk.Sinceitsdevelopmentinthecollege,theBabcockTesthashardlybeenmodified.ExpansionofthechemistryandbiologydepartmentswerelargelyledbyscholarsArthurMichael,whowasoneofthefirstorganicchemistsintheU.S.,andJohnSterlingKingsley,whowasoneofthefirstscholarsofcomparativeanatomy.[33][34] JumbointheBarnumMuseumofNaturalHistory P.T.BarnumwasoneoftheearliestbenefactorsofTuftsCollege,andtheBarnumMuseumofNaturalHistory(BarnumHall)wasconstructedin1884withfundsdonatedbyhimtohousehiscollectionofanimalspecimensandthestuffedhideofJumbotheelephant,whowouldbecometheuniversity'smascot.ThebuildingstooduntilApril14,1975,whenfireguttedBarnumHall,destroyingtheentirecollection. OnJuly15,1892,theTuftsBoardofTrusteesvoted"thattheCollegebeopenedtowomenintheundergraduatedepartmentsonthesametermsandconditionsasmen."MetcalfHallopenedin1893andservedasthedormitoryforwomen.Atthesamemeeting,thetrusteesvotedtocreateagraduateschoolfacultyandtoofferthePh.D.degreeinbiologyandchemistry.In1893theMedicalSchoolopenedandin1899theBostonDentalCollegewasintegratedintotheuniversity.In1890,theDepartmentofElectricalEngineeringwascreated,andin1892–1893thecourseofthree-yearprogramincivilengineeringwasextendedtofouryears.Withtheadventofthefour-yearprogramthedegreesgrantedwerebachelorofcivilorelectricalengineering.TuftsCollegeaddedtheDepartmentofMechanicalEngineeringandtheDepartmentofChemicalEngineeringin1894and1898,respectively.In1898,thetrusteesvotedtoformallyestablishanundergraduateCollegeofEngineering.[34] 20thcentury[edit] WalnutHillasitappearedpriortotheconstructionofTischLibraryandsteps,circa1910.InthecenterisEatonHall.Theroadtotherightnolongerexists. TheJacksonCollegeforWomenwasestablishedin1910asacoordinatecollegeadjacenttotheTuftscampus.In1980itwasintegratedwiththeCollegeofLiberalArtsbutisstillrecognizedintheformalnameoftheundergraduateartsandsciencesdivision,the"CollegeofLiberalArtsandJacksonCollege".UndergraduatewomeninartsandsciencescontinuedtoreceivetheirdiplomasfromJacksonCollegeuntil2002. Tuftsexpandedinthe1933withtheopeningoftheFletcherSchoolofLawandDiplomacy,thefirstgraduateschoolofinternationalaffairsintheUnitedStates.TheFletcherSchoolbeganasajointeffortbetweenTuftsandHarvardUniversity,fundedbyanendowmentfromlongtimeTuftsbenefactorandalumnusAustinBarclayFletcher.TuftsassumedfulladministrationoftheFletcherSchoolin1935,andstronglinkagesbetweenthetwoschoolsremain. DuringWorldWarII,TuftsCollegewasoneof131collegesanduniversitiesnationallythattookpartintheV-12NavyCollegeTrainingProgramwhichofferedstudentsapathtoaNavycommission.[35] DuetotravelrestrictionsimposedbyWorldWarII,theBostonRedSoxconductedspringtrainingforthe1943MajorLeagueseasonatTuftsCollege.[36]In1955,continuedexpansionwasreflectedinthechangeoftheschool'snametoTuftsUniversity.[37] TheuniversityexperiencedsomegrowthduringthepresidencyofJeanMayer(1976–1992).[38]MayerestablishedTufts'veterinary,nutrition,andbiomedicalschoolsandacquiredtheGraftonandTalloirescampuses,atthesametimeliftingtheuniversityoutofitsdirefinancialsituationbyincreasingthesizeoftheendowmentbyafactorof15.[38] TheCollegeofEngineeringaddedgraduatestudytoitscurriculumbeginningin1961,withmaster'sdegreesavailableinfourdepartments.ItaddedPh.D.programsinmechanicalengineeringin1963,electricalengineeringin1964,engineeringdesignin1981,andcivilengineeringin1985.In1984CEOandchairmanofAnalogicCorporationandNeuroLogicaCorporationBernardMarshallGordonfoundedtheTuftsGordonInstituteasthefirsteducationalinstitutioncreatedtofosterentrepreneurshipintheengineeringfields.In1991theNewEnglandAssociationofSchoolsandCollegesaccreditedtheinstitutetoconferthedegreeofMasterofScienceinEngineeringManagementandin1992theGordonInstitutebecamepartoftheCollegeofEngineering.In1999,theCollegeofEngineeringbecametheSchoolofEngineering,whenoversightofgraduateengineeringprogramswastransferredfromtheGraduateSchoolofArtsandSciences.AspartofthesamereorganizationtheFacultyofArtsandSciencebecametheFacultyofArts,Sciences,andEngineering(AS&E).[39] UnderPresidentLarryBacow,Tuftsstartedacapitalcampaignin2006withthegoalofraising$1.2billiontoimplementfullneed-blindadmissionby2011.[40][41]AsofDecember 10,2010[update]thecampaignraised$1.14billion.[42]Tuftsreceivedthelargestdonationsinitshistorysince2005,includinga$136millionbequesttoitsendowmentuponthedissolutionofacharitabletrustsetupby1911alumnusFrankC.Doble,[43][44]a$100milliongiftfromeBayfounderPierreOmidyartoestablishtheOmidyar-TuftsMicrofinanceFund,[45]andanumberof$40million-plusgiftstospecificschools.[46][47][48] In2008,HinesInterestsandTUDC,asubsidiaryoftheuniversity,plannedtobreakgroundontheSouthStationTower.TuftshadacquiredtheairrightsfromSouthStationin1990,withformerPresidentJeanMeyerenvisioningatowerthatwouldbethecenterofmedicalresearch.PreliminarydesignwasdonebyCesarPelli,withconstructionscheduledtostartin2017.[49]However,Tuftswithdrewfromtheprojectin2009.[50] OnNovember30,2010,theuniversityannouncedthatAnthonyP.Monaco,formerlyofOxfordUniversity,wouldbecomeitsthirteenthpresident.[51]Monaco'sinaugurationtookplaceonOctober21,2011.[52] AsofOctober15,2015,ComputerSciencesurpassedInternationalRelationsasthelargestmajorattheuniversity,with466declaredmajors.[53] OnDecember22,2015,theuniversityannouncedthatitwouldacquiretheSchooloftheMuseumofFineArts.ThemergerwascompletedonJune30,2016.[54]Oneofthekeyfiguresinthemerger,NancyBauer,becamethedeanofthemuseumschool.[55] InDecember2015,theuniversitycompletedareconstructionoftheMemorialStairs.AnewCentralEnergyPlantwasunderconstructionandsettofinishinthesummerof2016.Itwillreplaceanaging60yearoldplantandprovidenewefficiencyboilerswhichinadditiontoprovidingtheuniversitydirectlywithelectricity,heatedandchilledwater,willhelptheuniversitycutemissions.[56]TheuniversityalsocompletedconstructionoftheScienceandEngineeringComplex(SEC)in2017.TheSECfeatureslaboratoriesandfostersinterdisciplinaryresearchbetweentheneuroscienceandenvironmentalsciencedepartments.TheSECjoinsthenewlyrehabilitated574BostonAvenueintheexpansionofclassroomandlaboratoryfacilitiesfortheengineeringschool.[57]Inthespringof2022,theuniversityplanstoopenthenewly-constructedJoyceCummingsCenter,aninterdisciplinaryacademicbuildingwhichwillhousethecomputerscienceandeconomicsdepartments,amongothers.[58] In2016,Microsoftco-founderPaulAllenpledgeda$10milliondonationoverfouryearsforthecreationoftheAllenDiscoveryCentersatTuftsandStanford.Thecenterswouldfundresearchthatwouldreadandwritethemorphogeneticcode.TuftsbiologistMichaelLevinwillleadthecenterwithresearchfocusingoncommunicationsbetweencellsandthecausationofbirthdefects,cancer,traumaticinjuriesanddegenerativediseases.[59][60] OnJanuary2,2020,TuftsannouncedthatitwouldpaytheMBTA$2millionover10yearstorenametheadjacentGreenLineExtensionstationfrom"CollegeAvenue"to"Medford/Tufts."[61] Campuses[edit] MedfordandSomerville[edit] Tufts'maincampusislocatedonWalnutHillinMedfordandSomerville,about5miles(8.0 km)fromBostononthesiteoftheoriginalfarmofCharlesTufts,theuniversity'snamesake.ThiscampushousesallundergraduatesinArts&SciencesandEngineering,thegraduateprogramsatTheFletcherSchoolofLawandDiplomacyandallofthegraduateprogramsinArts&SciencesandEngineering.WhilethemajorityofthecampusisinMedford,theSomervillelineintersectsit,placingpartsofthelowercampusinSomervilleandleadingtothecommonterms"Uphill"and"Downhill". The"Uphill"portionofthecampuscomprisestheacademicandtheresidential"Rez"quad,andisenclosedbyawrought-ironfence.Classesthatcontributedtothebuildingofthefencearecommemoratedalongitslength.Theacademicquadcontainstheearliestbuildingsandwasprimarilybuiltfromthemiddleofthe19thcenturytothebeginningofthe20thcentury.OneofTufts'firstbuildings,BallouHallwasconstructedfrom1852to1854andwasdesignedintheItalianatestylebythewellknownBostonarchitectGridleyJamesFoxBryant.BallouHallwaslaterrestoredbyMcKim,Mead,andWhitein1955–56,andhousestheofficesofthepresident,theprovost,andseveralvicepresidentsanddeans.Othernotablebuildingsinclude:PackardHall(1856),EastHall(1860),WestHall(1871),GoddardChapel(1882),GoddardHall(1883),BarnumHall(1884),andEatonHall(1908).[62]TheNewYorkfirmWhitfield&KingwasresponsibleforthedesignofEatonHall. ThePresidentofTuftsUniversity,whoiselectedbythetrusteesisthechiefexecutiveofficeroftheuniversity.AssistingthepresidentinadministeringtheuniversityaretheProvost,theExecutiveVicePresident,theTreasurer,andtheSecretary,allofwhomareappointedbythetrusteesonthenominationofthepresidentandserveattheirpleasure.The13thpresident,AnthonyMonaco,wasswornonAugust1,2011.[69] Tuftsisorganizedintotenschools.Eachschoolhasitsownfaculty,andisledbyadeanappointedbythepresidentandtheprovostwiththeconsentoftheBoardofTrustees.TheSchoolofArtsandSciencesandtheSchoolofEngineeringaretheonlyschoolsthatawardbothundergraduateandgraduatedegrees.TheschoolsofferingundergraduateeducationaretheSchoolofArtsandSciences(theliberalartscollegeofferingboththeBachelorofArtsandBachelorofSciencedegreeaswellastheBachelorofFineArtsdegreeattheSchooloftheMuseumofFineArts),theSchoolofEngineering(whichofferstheBachelorofSciencedegree),andtheSchoolofSpecialStudies.TheJonathanM.TischCollegeofCitizenshipandPublicServiceandtheExperimentalCollegearenon-degreegranting. TheTischCollegewasfoundedin2000"toeducateforactivecitizenship"withthehelpofa$10milliongiftfromeBayfounderPierreOmidyarandhiswifePam.Theschoolwasrenamedin2006aftera$40milliongiftfromJonathanTisch.Ithasbeencalledthe"mostambitiousattemptbyanyresearchuniversitytomakepublicservicepartofitscoreacademicmission".[70]Thecollegefacilitatesandsupportsawiderangeofcommunityservice,civicengagementprograms,research,andteachinginitiativesacrosstheuniversity.Theuniversityrunsonasemesterbasedcalendarwithmostundergraduatestudentsfinishingwithinfouryears,however,TischCollegeprovidesaninnovative1+4BridgeyearprogramwherestudentshavetheopportunitytotakeacommunityservicebasedgapyearbeforestartinginTufts.CurrentprojectsundertakenbyBridgeYearFellowsinvolveservingasmentorsandteacherstochildren,caringforrescuedwildanimals,contributingtorenewableenergyandsustainabilityprojects.CurrentprojectsarebasedinBrazil,Nicaragua,andSpain.[71] UnderthepurviewoftheSchoolofArtsandSciencesistheExperimentalCollege(orExCollege),createdin1964asaprovinggroundforinnovative,experimental,andinterdisciplinarycurriculaandcourses.Itofferstheopportunityforstudentstotakefor-creditcourseswithnon-academicpractitionersinavarietyoffields,andalsofromupper-levelundergraduateswhohaveachancetodesignandteachtheirowncourses.AnothersuccessfulcomponentoftheExCollegeisEPIIC,ayear-longprogrambegunin1985toimmersestudentsinaglobalissue,whichculminatesinanannualsymposiumofscholarsandexpertsfromthefield. Graduateeducationisofferedineightoftheschools.InadditiontoArtsandSciencesandEngineering,TuftsoffersgraduatedegreesintheFletcherSchoolofLawandDiplomacy,theoldestU.S.schoolforinternationalrelationsandforeignaffairs,theSchoolofDentalMedicine,theSchoolofMedicine,theSchoolofBiomedicalSciences,theFriedmanSchoolofNutrition,andtheCummingsSchoolofVeterinaryMedicine.Additionally,theuniversitypreviouslyprovidedmaster'sdegreesinreligionthroughtheCraneTheologicalSchool.Theschoolwasdissolvedin1968.
