Whatisgenderidentity?Genderidentityreferstooursenseofwhoweareandhowweseeanddescribeourselves.Mostpeopleidentifyas"male"or"female".Thesearesometimescalled"binary"identities.Butsomepeoplefeeltheirgenderidentityisdifferentfromtheirbiologicalsex.Forexample,somepeoplemayhavemalegenitalsandfacialhairbutdonotidentifyasamaleorfeelmasculine.Somemayhavefemalegenitalsandbreastsbutdonotidentifyasafemaleorfeelfeminine.Somepeopledonotdefinethemselvesashavinga"binary"identity.Forthemtheconceptofgenderisnotrelevanttotheiridentity.Theymayusedifferentterms,suchasagender,genderdiverse,gendernon-conforming,todescribetheiridentity.However,asagroup,theyareoftencalled"non-binary".GenderdysphoriaandgenderidentityManypeoplewithgenderdysphoriahaveastrong,lastingdesiretolivealifethat"matches"orexpressestheirgenderidentity.Theydothisbychangingthewaytheylookandbehave.Somepeoplewithgenderdysphoria,butnotall,maywanttousehormonesandsometimessurgerytoexpresstheirgenderidentity.Genderdysphoriaisnotamentalillness,butsomepeoplemaydevelopmentalhealthproblemsbecauseofgenderdysphoria. SignsofgenderdysphoriaPeoplewithgenderdysphoriamayhavechangedtheirappearance,theirbehaviourortheirinterests.Theymayalsoshowsignsofdiscomfortordistress,including:lowself-esteembecomingwithdrawnorsociallyisolateddepressionoranxietytakingunnecessaryrisksneglectingthemselvesReadmoreaboutthe signsofgenderdysphoria.ChildrenandgenderidentityChildrenmayshowaninterestinclothesortoysthatsocietytellsusaremoreoftenassociatedwiththeoppositegender.Theymaybeunhappywiththeirphysicalsexcharacteristics.However,thistypeofbehaviourisreasonablycommoninchildhoodandispartofgrowingup.Itdoesnotmeanthatallchildrenbehavingthiswayhavegenderdysphoriaorothergenderidentityissues.Asmallnumberofchildrenmayfeellastingandseveredistress,whichgetsworseastheygetolder.Thisoftenhappensaroundpuberty,whenyoungpeoplemightfeelthattheirphysicalappearancedoesnotmatchtheirgenderidentity.Thisfeelingcancontinueintoadulthoodwithsomepeoplehavingastrongdesiretochangepartsoftheirphysicalappearance,suchasfacialhairorbreasts.Findoutmoreinformationifyouthinkyourchildmighthavegenderdysphoria. HowtogethelpSeeaGPifyouthinkyouoryourchildmayhavegenderdysphoria.IftheGPagrees,theycanreferyoutoagenderdysphoriaclinic(GDC)whereyou’llbeassessedbyaspecialistteam.Youdonotneedtobeassessedbyamentalhealthservicefirst,andtheGPdoesnotneedpriorapprovalfromtheirClinicalCommissioningGroup(CCG)responsibleforlocalhealthservices.Youcanself-refertoaGDC,butareferralbytheGPisbest.ThisisbecausetheycangivetheGDCyourdetailedmedicalhistory.Ifyouarealreadyseeingadoctororpsychologistforotherconditions,askthemiftheycanreferyoutoaGDC.Referralsforchildrenandyoungpeopleupto18yearswillbetotheGenderIdentityDevelopmentService(GIDS)forchildrenandadolescents.ReferralsforadultstooneofthegenderdysphoriaclinicsinEnglandmaybemadefrom17yearsofage.WaitingtimesAstherehasbeenahugeincreaseinthenumberofpeopleseekingareferraltoagenderdysphoriaclinic,waitingtimescanbelong..FindouthowyourGPandotherorganisationscansupportyouwhileyouwaittoseeaGDC. TreatmentforgenderdysphoriaAfteradetailedassessmenttoconfirmthediagnosisofgenderdysphoriaandwhatitmeansforyou,theGDCteamwillworkwithyouonanagreedtreatmentplan.Ifyouareassessedasnothavinggenderdysphoria,theGDCmayrecommendotherformsofsupporttoyourGP.TreatmentsprovidedbytheGDCareintendedtoprovidelastingrelieffromgenderdysphoria.Thiscanmeandifferentthingstodifferentpeople.Forsomepeople,treatmentmayjustinvolveacceptanceandaffirmationorconfirmationoftheiridentity.Forothers,itmayinvolvebiggerchanges,suchaschangestotheirvoice,hormonetreatmentorsurgery.Readmoreabouttreatmentsforgenderdysphoria. What causesgenderdysphoria?Theexactcauseofgenderdysphoriaisunclear.Genderdevelopmentiscomplexandtherearestillthingsthatarenotknownorfullyunderstood.Genderdysphoriaisnotrelatedtosexualorientation.Peoplewithgenderdysphoriamayidentifyasstraight,gay,lesbianorbisexual. Howcommonisgenderdysphoria?Noonereallyknowsbecausenotallpeoplewhohaveasenseofuneaseabouttheiridentity,oralreadyidentifyasgenderdiverse,needoraskforsupportfromtheNHS.Thenumberofpeoplebeingreferredanddiagnosedwiththeconditionhasincreasedalotoverthelastdecade.In2018/19around8,000peoplewerereferredtoadultgenderdysphoriaservicesinEngland.
