Arecordofparticularsignificancestatesthat"FengrepresentsthemaleandHuangrepresentsthefemalebirds."TheFenghuanghasbeenthefocusofinterestanddebatewhetherit'sahermaphroditicbirdortwobirdsofdifferentgenders.Interestingly,theFenghuangandtheVermilionBirdhavebeendepictedassingularbirdsaswellasinpairsinbothChineseandKoguryomurals. However,mostKoguryotombmuralsdepicttheVermilionBirdastwoseparateentities.ThedepictionoftheVermilionBird,whichsymbolizesthesoutherncardinalpoint,astwoseparatebirdsmaybeinterpretedasanecessitysincesoutherntombentrancesrequirethatimagesbepaintedonbothsidesofthecenter.BecausetheVermilionBirdisasymbolofYinandYang,however,thepracticecanbeinterpretedasawaytoemphasizebalancebypaintingbothmaleandfemalebirds.
