gtuitionat­four-­yearschoolsmorethan70percent.Graph2fromtheCenteronBudgetandPolicyPrioritiesdemonstrates.AccordingtotheWallStreetJournal,in1975,aUniversityofMinnesotaundergraduatecouldcovertuitionbyworkingsixhoursaweek­year-­roundata­minimum-­wagejob.Today,astudentwouldhavetowork­thirty-­twohoursa­week—­closeto­full-­time—­tocoverthecost.Theresultofthesehikestotuitionisescalatingstudentdebt.TheInstituteforCollegeAccessandSuccessreportedthat71percentoftheclassof2012haddebtatgraduation,andtheaveragedebtof$29,400wasup25percentcomparedto2008figures.3CurrentlystudentdebtinAmericatotalsapproximately$1trillion,anddefaultratesontheseloanshaveclimbedforsixstraightyears.Astoundingly,inthemidstofthiscrisis,universitieshavechosentovastlyincreasehiresatthehighestendofthepay­scale—­universityadministratorssuchasdeans,provosts,andthelike.AccordingtotheU.S.DepartmentofEducation,between2001and2011,thenumberofadministratorshiredbycollegesanduniversitiesincreased50percentfasterthanthenumberofinstructors.Between2008and2012,universityspendingonadministratorsalariesincreased61percent,whilespendingonstudentsincreasedonly39percent.TheUniversityofMinnesotasystemaddedmorethanonethousandadministratorsbetween2001and2012,foranincreaseof37percent,twotimesthegrowthofbothteachingstaffandstudentbody.Tobalancethelossoffundingcombinedwiththeaddedsalaryburdenofnewadministrativepositions,collegesanduniversitieshaveslashededucationalprograms,cutfacultypositions,eliminatedcourseofferings,closedcampuses,shutdowncomputerlabs,andreducedlibraryservices.Arizona’suniversitysystem,forexample,cutmorethan2,100positionsbetween2008and2013,andmerged,consolidated,oreliminated182colleges,schools,programs,anddepartments,whileclosingeightextensioncampusesentirely.DuringthesameperiodtheUniversityofCalifornialaidoff4,200staffandeliminatedorleftunfilledanother9,500positions;instituteda­system-­widefurloughprogram,reducingsalaries4to10percent;consolidatedoreliminatedmorethan180programs;andcutfundingforcampusadministrativeandacademicdepartmentsbyasmuchas35percent.Withfewerfacultyandmorestudents,whoisteachingtheclasses?Temporary,contingentfacultyknownasadjuncts.Adjunctshavereplacedtraditionaltenuretrackprofessorsasthemajorityofinstructionalstaffoncampuses:in2013approximately75percentofuniversityfacultywerecontingentandonly25percentpermanenttenureline.Fortyyearsago,theseproportionswereexactlythereverse.Between1975and2011,thenumberof­full-­timetenuredortenuretrackpositionsincreasedjust23percent,toabout310,000,but­part-­timeappointmentsrosealmost300percentto762,000,accordingtothe2012–13annualreportoftheAmericanAssociationofUniversityProfessors.Graph3fromtheAAUPshowstheshift.Adjuncts,whoarealsosometimescalledinstructors,lecturers,teachingprofessors,teachingpostdocs,orvisitingassistantprofessors,oftenhavePh.D.’sandscholarlyrecordsequivalenttothoseonthetenuretrack,andteachthesameclasses.However,theyarepaidafractionofthesalary.Whereatenurelinefacultymemberin2014couldexpecttoearnanaveragesalary(encompassingallranks)ofcloseto$102,000atdoctoralinstitutions,and$75,317atliberalartscolleges,anadjunctwaslikelytobepaidamere$1,800to$2,700percourseforamaximumannualsalaryofaround$23,000peryear.Whenthehoursofrequiredworkarefactoredin,adjuncts’hourly­take-­homepayofabout$9islessthanthatearnedbyatypicalWalmartworker.­Seventy-­ninepercentofadjunctsdonotreceivehealthinsuranceatwork,and86percentdonotreceiveretirementbenefits.Adjunctsatinstitutionsofeveryrankoftenqualifyforwelfareandfoodstamps.Thenumberofpeoplewithadvanceddegreesreceivingpublicassistancemorethandoubledbetween2007and2010,from111,458to272,684.WashingtonPostwriterColemanMcCarthywroteofthe“hordesofadjuncts”who“sloglikemigrantworkersfromcampustocampus.”“Teachingfourfallandfourspringcoursesat$2,700each,”hecontinued,“generatesanannualsalaryof$21,600,belowthenationalpovertylineforafamilyoffour.”AstheLosAngelesTimesrecentlyobserved,“ThelivesofmanyadjunctprofessorsareonesofDickensianmisery.”Addedtothisfinancialstruggleistheescalatingstudentdebtbornebythosewithadvanceddegrees.Graduatestudentdebtisthefastestgrowingtypeofstudentdebt,andgraduatestudentsnowoweanaverageof$57,600.Oneinfourgraduatestudentsowesalmost$100,000.Adjunctsalsolackaccesstothebasicresourcesandtoolsofuniversityteaching,suchasanoffice,aphoneline,alibrarycard,orevenphotocopyingprivileges.Theyaretypicallytoldoftheirteachingassignmentjustdaysorweeksbeforethefirstdayofclass,andmustscrambletoprepare.Whenadjunctsarriveoncampus,94percentreceivenocampusordepartmentorientation.Despitetheirqualifications,skills,anddedication,adjunctscannotmanage,withtheirimpoverishedresourcesandprecariousemploymentstatus,toprovideaqualityofstudentexperienceequivalenttothatprovidedbyprofessorswithjobsecurityandfullaccesstouniversityresources.AstenuretrackfacultymemberturnedadjunctAliceUmber(apseudonym)wroteinherChronicleofHigherEducationcolumn“IUsedtoBeaGoodTeacher”:“I’mnotsuggestingthatadjunctsarepoorerteachersthan­tenure-­trackprofessors(exceptinthefiscalsense),onlythattheverylimitedinstitutiona
