Fordogswithcognitivedysfunction,thereisnocureandthetreatmentoptionsarelessstraightforward.TherearemedicationssuchasAniprylanddietarysupplementssuchasfattyacidsandSAMethatclaimtoslowdownthecognitivedeclineorlessenthesymptoms,buttheresultsareequivocal.Anxietyduringthenightcanoftenbethemostdistressfulsymptomforourdogswithcognitivedysfunctionsoanti-anxietymedicationssuchasValium,XanaxorTrazadonemayberecommended. Wealsohavea161/2yearoldChi/Corgiwhoalsohasdementiaandhegetsthesameloveandcareasthoughhewereourbiologicalchild. Ourlittleguyhasalwaystriedhisbesttotakecareofuswhenwewereillorsadorscared. Soasdifficultasitisthehonorofcaringforandlovinghimthruhismostcriticaltimeofneeddoestakeatollonus(mostlymeasmydearpoststrokehusbandseemstosleepthrumostthings)andlikeyouIknowwhenheisgonejusthowmuchwewillcontinuetolovehimandmisshimeveryday. Iamnotareligiouspersonbuthavefaithandthehopethatonedaywewillreuniteandbewithallourlovedonesandthatincludesourfurbabies.
