Dr.Smith'sson,C.RugglesSmith,wasdesperateforawaytosavesomethingofMiddlesexUniversity.HelearnedofaNewYorkcommitteeheadedbyDr.IsraelGoldsteinthatwasseekingacampustoestablishaJewish-sponsoredsecularuniversity.SmithapproachedGoldsteinwithaproposaltogivetheMiddlesexcampusandchartertoGoldstein'scommittee,inthehopethathiscommitteemight"possesstheapparentabilitytoreestablishtheSchoolofMedicineonanapprovedbasis."WhileGoldsteinwasconcernedaboutbeingsaddledwithafailingmedicalschool,hewasexcitedabouttheopportunitytosecurea100-acre(40-hectare)"campusnotfarfromNewYork,thepremierJewishcommunityintheworld,andonly9miles(14 km)fromBoston,oneoftheimportantJewishpopulationcenters."[18]GoldsteinagreedtoacceptSmith'soffer,proceedingtorecruitGeorgeAlpert,aBostonlawyerwithfundraisingexperienceasnationalvicepresidentoftheUnitedJewishAppeal.[citationneeded] BrandeisUniversitysign AlperthadworkedhiswaythroughBostonUniversitySchoolofLawandco-foundedthefirmofAlpertandAlpert.Alpert'sfirmhadalongassociationwiththeNewYork,NewHavenandHartfordRailroad,ofwhichhewastobecomepresidentfrom1956to1961.[19][20]HeisbestknowntodayasthefatherofRichardAlpert(BabaRamDass).[21]HewasinfluentialinBoston'sJewishcommunity.HisJudaism"tendedtobesocialratherthanspiritual."[22]HewasinvolvedinassistingchildrendisplacedfromGermany.[23]AlpertwastobechairmanofBrandeisfrom1946to1954,andatrusteefrom1946untilhisdeath.[19]ByFebruary5,1946,GoldsteinhadrecruitedAlbertEinstein,whoseinvolvementdrewnationalattentiontothenascentuniversity.[24]Einsteinbelievedtheuniversitywouldattractthebestyoungpeopleinallfields,satisfyingarealneed.[25] InMarch1946,Goldsteinsaidthefoundationhadraisedtenmilliondollarsthatitwouldusetoopentheschoolbythefollowingyear.[26]ThefoundationpurchasedMiddlesexUniversity'slandandbuildingsfortwomilliondollars.[25]ThecharterofthisoperationwastransferredtotheFoundationalongwiththecampus.ThefoundingorganizationwasannouncedinAugustandnamedTheAlbertEinsteinFoundationforHigherLearning,Inc.[27]ThenewschoolwouldbeaJewish-sponsoredsecularuniversityopentostudentsandfacultyofallracesandreligions.[27] RabbGraduateCenter(1965,BenjaminThompson) ThetrusteesofferedtonametheuniversityafterEinsteininthesummerof1946,butEinsteindeclined,andonJuly16,1946,theboarddecidedtheuniversitywouldbenamedafterLouisBrandeis.[28]Einsteinobjectedtowhathethoughtwasexcessivelyexpansivepromotion,andtoGoldstein'ssoundingoutAbramL.SacharasapossiblepresidentwithoutconsultingEinstein.EinsteintookgreatoffenseatGoldstein'shavinginvitedCardinalFrancisSpellmantoparticipateinafundraisingevent.Einsteinalsobecamealarmedbypressannouncementsthatexaggeratedtheschool'ssuccessatfundraising. EinsteinthreatenedtosevertieswiththefoundationonSeptember2,1946.BelievingtheventurecouldnotsucceedwithoutEinstein,Goldsteinquicklyagreedtoresignhimself,andEinsteinrecanted.[29]Einstein'snear-departurewaspubliclydenied.[30][31]Goldsteinsaidthat,despitehisresignation,hewouldcontinuetosolicitdonationsforthefoundation.[30]OnNovember1,1946,thefoundationannouncedthatthenewuniversitywouldbenamedBrandeisUniversity,afterLouisD.Brandeis,justiceoftheUnitedStatesSupremeCourt.[32]Bytheendof1946,thefoundationsaidithadraisedoverfivehundredthousanddollars,[33]andtwomonthslateritsaidithaddoubledthatamount.[34] TheBrandeisboardfeltitwasinnopositiontomaketheinvestmentinthemedicalschoolthatwouldenableittoreceiveaccreditation,andcloseditin1947.EinsteinwantedMiddlesexUniversity'sveterinaryschool'sstandardstobeimprovedbeforeexpandingtotheschool,[29]whileothersinthefoundationwantedtosimplyclosetheveterinaryschool,[31]which,bythewinterof1947,hadanenrollmentofjustabout100students.[34]Aprofessionalstudyoftheveterinaryschoolrecommendeddismissingcertaininstructorsandrequiringend-of-yearexaminationsforthestudents,butthefoundationdeclinedtoenactanyoftherecommendations,tothedismayofEinsteinandacoupleofthefoundation'strustees.[35] InearlyJune1947,Einsteinmadeafinalbreakwiththefoundation.[29][36]Theveterinaryschoolwasclosed,despitestudents'protestsanddemonstrations.[31]AccordingtoGeorgeAlpert,alawyerresponsibleformuchoftheorganizationaleffort,Einsteinhadwantedtoofferthepresidencyoftheschooltoleft-wingscholarHaroldLaski,[37]someonethatAlperthadcharacterizedas"amanutterlyalientoAmericanprinciplesofdemocracy,tarredwiththeCommunistbrush."[24]Hesaid,"Icancompromiseonanysubjectbutone:thatoneisAmericanism."[31]Twoofthefoundation'strustees,S.RalphLazrusandDr.OttoNathan,quitthefoundationatthesametimeasEinstein.[29]Inresponse,AlpertsaidthatLazrusandNathanhadtriedtogiveBrandeisUniversitya"radical,politicalorientation."[38]AlpertalsocriticizedLazrus'lackoffundraisingsuccessandNathan'sfailuretoorganizeaneducationaladvisorycommittee.[38]Einsteinsaidhe,Lazrus,andNathan"havealwaysbeenandhavealwaysactedincompleteharmony."[39] OnApril26,1948,BrandeisUniversityannouncedthatAbramL.Sachar,chairmanoftheNationalHillelCommission,hadbeenchosenasBrandeis'firstpresident.[40]SacharpromisedthatBrandeisUniversitywouldfollowLouisBrandeis'principlesofacademicintegrityandservice.[41]Healsopromisedthatstudentsandfacultywouldneverbechosenbasedonquotasof"geneticorethnicoreconomicdistribution"becausechoicesbasedonquotas"arebasedontheassumptionthattherearestandardpopulationstrains,onthebeliefthattheidealAmericanmustlookandactlikeaneighteenth-centuryPuritan,thatthemeltingpotofAmericamustmoldallwhoallwholivehereintosuchapattern."[42]Studentswhoappliedtotheschoolwerenotaskedtheirrace,religion,orancestry.[43] Anine-footbronzestatueofJusticeLouisD.Brandeisisacampuslandmark.Thesculpture,createdbysculptorRobertBerks,wasunveiledin1956inhonorofthe100thanniversaryofBrandeis'birth.[69][70]Berks'wifeDorothyhadbeentheJustice'spersonalassistantfor39yearsandworehisactualrobestomodelthestatue.[70] AfterBrandeisUniversityawardedanhonorarydoctoratetoIsraeliPremierDavidBen-Gurionin1960,[71]JordanboycottedBrandeisUniversity,announcingthatitwouldnotissuecurrencypermitstoJordanianstudentsatBrandeis.[72] Beginninginfall1959,singerEddieFisherestablishedtwoscholarshipsattheuniversity,oneforclassicalandoneforpopularmusic,inthenameofEddieCantor.[73] OnMay16,1960,Brandeisannounceditwoulddiscontinueitsvarsityfootballteam.[74]PresidentAbramSacharpointedtothecostoftheteamasonereasonforthedecision.[74]Brandeis'footballcoachBennyFriedmansaiditwasdifficulttorecruitfootballplayerswhowerealsoexcellentstudentswithsomuchcompetitionintheBostonmetropolitanarea.[75]Brandeissaidthediscontinuationofvarsityfootballwouldallowittoexpandintercollegiateactivityinothersports.[75]Duringitsnineyearsofvarsityplay,Brandeis'footballteamrecorded34wins,33losses,andfourties.[75]In1985,BrandeiswaselectedtomembershipintheAssociationofAmericanUniversities,anassociationthatfocusesongraduateeducationandresearch.[76] StudenttakeoverofFordHall[edit] OnJanuary8,1969,about70blackstudentsenteredthen-student-center,FordHall,ejectedeveryoneelsefromthebuilding,andrefusedtoleave.[77]Thestudents'demandsincludedthehiringofmoreblackfacultymembers,increasingblackstudentenrollmentfromfourpercenttotenpercentofthestudentbody,[78]establishinganindependentdepartmentonAfricanAmericanstudies,[79]andanincreaseinscholarshipsforblackstudents.[80]ThestudentprotestersrenamedtheschoolMalcolmXUniversityforthedurationofthesiege,distributingbuttonswiththenewnameandlogo,andissuedalistoffourteendemandsforbetterminorityrepresentationoncampus.[81]Thestudentsrefusedtoallowtelephonecallsgothroughthetelephoneswitchboard.[82]Over200whitestudentsstagedasit-ininthelobbyoftheadministrationbuilding.[83]Classescontinuedoncampusduringtheprotest.[79]OthercampusesthathadprotestsatthesametimeincludedSanFranciscoStateCollege,[84]theUniversityofMinnesota,SwarthmoreCollege,CheyneyStateCollege,[85]QueensCollege,[86]andSanJoseStateCollege.[87] PresidentMorrisB.Abramsaidthat,althoughherecognized"thedeepfrustrationandangerwhichblackstudentshereandalloverthecountry—andoftenis—theindifferenceandduplicityofwhitemeninrelationtoblacks",[83]thestudents'actionswereanaffronttotheuniversity,[78]Abramsaidthat"nothinglessthanacademicfreedomitselfisunderassault."[83]Thefacultycondemnedthestudents'actionsaswell.[78]Onthethirddayoftheprotest,Abramproposedcreatingthreecommitteesto"spelloutindetailthosepointswhichstilldivideus."[88]Thestudentsrejectedtheidea.[88] Onthefourthdayoftheprotest,theMiddlesexSuperiorCourtissuedatemporaryrestrainingorder,requiringthestudentstoleaveFordHall.[79]WhileAbramsaidhewouldnotallowtheordertobeenforcedbyforciblyremovingthestudentsfromFordHall,hedidsaythat65studentshadbeensuspendedfortheiractions.[83]OnJanuary18,theblackstudentsexitedFordHall,endingtheeleven-dayoccupationofthebuilding.[89]Brandeisandstudentsstillwerenotinagreementononeofthedemands,namelytheestablishmentofanautonomousdepartmentonAfricanAmericanstudies.Brandeisinsistedthatsuchadepartmentbesubjecttothesamerulesasanyotherdepartment.[89]Therehadbeennoviolenceordestructionofpropertyduringtheoccupation,andBrandeisgavethestudentsamnestyfromtheiractions.[89]RonaldWaltersbecamethefirstchairofAfro-AmericanstudiesatBrandeislaterthesameyear.[90]FordHallwasdemolishedinAugust2000tomakewayfortheShapiroCampusCenter,whichwasopenedanddedicatedOctober3,2002. 21stcentury[edit] TheVolenCenterforComplexSystems(1994,CannonDesign) LandsmanResearchFacility(completed2005,dedicated2008),hometoasuperconductingmagnet.[91] In2014,BrandeisannounceditwouldofferanhonorarydoctoratetoAyaanHirsiAli,"astaunchsupporterofwomen'srights",[92]andanoutspokencampaigneragainstfemalegenitalmutilation,honorkillingandIslamicextremismingeneral.AftercomplaintsfromtheCouncilonAmerican-IslamicRelationsandinternalconsultationwithfacultyandstudents,Brandeispubliclywithdrewtheoffer,citingthatAli'sstatementscondemningIslam[93]were"inconsistentwiththeUniversity'scorevalues".[94]87outof511facultymembersatBrandeissignedalettertotheuniversitypresident. TheuniversityannouncedthatthedecisiontowithdrawtheinvitationwasmadeafteradiscussionbetweenAyaanAliandPresidentFrederickLawrence,statingthat"Sheisacompellingpublicfigureandadvocateforwomen'srights...butwecannotoverlookcertainofherpaststatements".[95]AccordingtoBrandeis,Aliwasneverinvitedtospeakatcommencement,shewasonlyinvitedtoreceiveanhonorarydegree.[96]AlisaidthatBrandeis'decisionsurprisedherbecauseBrandeissaidtheydidnotknowwhatshehadsaidinthepasteventhoughherspeecheswerepubliclyavailableontheinternet,callingita"feebleexcuse".[97]Alistatedthattheuniversity'sdecisionwasmotivatedinpartbyfearofoffendingMuslims.[97]Shearguedthatthe"spiritoffreeexpression"referredtointheBrandeisstatementhasbeenbetrayedandstifled.[98] WhilesomecommentatorssuchasAbdullahAntepli,theMuslimchaplainandadjunctfacultyofIslamicStudiesatDukeUniversity,applaudedthedecisionandwarnedagainst"makingrenegadesintoheroes",[99]otheracademiccommentatorssuchastheUniversityofChicago'sJerryCoyne[100]andtheGeorgeMasonUniversityFoundationProfessorDavidBernstein[101]criticizedthedecisionasanattackonacademicvaluessuchasfreedomofinquiryandintellectualindependencefromreligiouspressuregroups.
